Trenten's Story
|
After several days of intense pain, mommy went to the emergency room on Christmas Eve.
The sonogram revealed that she had a miscarriage (20 day old fetus) but the baby had not
been released. She was to return in two days for a D&C. Upon returning to the hospital, another
sonogram revealed a heart beat.
The following days were filled with tests which revealed
the baby was bleeding. This was the stage that the spine and brain were developing.
The doctors explained that bleeding at this time is found in babies who are born with spinal bifida.
We were already familiar with spinal bifida, a very serious condition in which there is an
opening in the spine and the organs grow outside the body. It would be quite some
time before the doctors would know if the baby actually had that condition.
But later sonograms revealed there was no hole in the spine. Still, there was no way to
know what condition the baby would be born in due to the bleeding.
The time came for the baby to be taken by C-section. His body showed no signs of malformation.
But he could not breathe properly. He spent the early days in the ICU ward and the wait began.
He was not allowed to eat or have visitors (for risk of pneumonia). When he was later allowed to
eat, he was not interested. He just kept loosing weight. He also did not cry or move much leading
to the question about the functioning of the brain.
Though time will tell if there are further problems, it does look like the worst is over. And
another journey begins. Trenten is home now and is doing well. He is small, but hopefully, he will
soon regain all the weight he has lost.
UPDATE 10/23/01:
Trenten is doing well. He gained all his weight back and more. He continues to have difficulties
breathing but is managing.
